In addition to the artwork, the book includes an in-depth interview with director Makoto Shinkai about layouts and storyboards, a conversation with art director Hiroshi Takiguchi and painter Nizo Yamamoto (art director of Castle in the Sky), and interviews with assistant art directors Jo Watanabe and Yuna Murooka on art settings. A special section on pre-production showcases “art boards,” “color scripts,” “rough sketches,” and “3D models,” accompanied by detailed commentary from art director Hiroshi Takiguchi, offering a rare look into how the film’s astonishing backgrounds were created.
