In contrast to the more experimental, Joshua Welton–driven sound of “HITnRUN Phase One,” this album reunites Prince with The New Power Generation and leans deeply into classic soul and funk. The opening track “Baltimore” was recorded as a tribute and protest following the 2015 death of Freddie Gray in Baltimore, underlining Prince’s continued commitment to social issues. Even a decade after its release, Prince’s statement that “HITnRUN sounds like today” still rings true, with the music remaining timeless and forward-looking.
